The much-awaited AFL Origin representative match will get underway at Perth’s Optus Stadium on February 14, 2024. It’s a dream matchup — two star-studded teams, both helmed by legendary coaches, set to wage battle. Chris Scott, recognized for his remarkable coaching record, will lead the Victorian team, while Dean Cox, who will take the reins as head coach of Sydney in the 2025 season, will coach Western Australia.
Chris Scott has been in charge of Geelong since 2011. During his time at the club, he has established a reputation for success and excellence both on and off the field. His leadership will be key as he gears up to pick a stronghold of squad for the reprise clash. The teams will be composed of players based on the clubs they were drafted from rather than their birthplace, showcasing talent from across Australia.
Victoria’s last line-up had a decent backline, with Callum Wilkie, Jacob Weitering and Josh Battle anchoring the rearguard. Our back three are Bailey Dale, Tom Stewart and Ed Richards. In the meantime, the midfield is surrounded by Hugh McCluggage, Marcus Bontempelli and Noah Anderson. Max Gawn will be the captain and ruck for Victoria.
Western Australia will add a most muscular competitive edge. Half-forwards in Mitch Georgiades, Aaron Naughton and Callum Ah Chee will lead the forward line. In 2023, Liam Ryan, Jesse Hogan, and Luke Jackson will spearhead the forward line. At the same time, Darcy Cameron, Chad Warner and Shai Bolton will be introduced to the forward / ruck hybrid roles.
Charley Cameron, Nathan Broad, Bobby Hill and Jake Waterman are on Victoria’s interchanges so there’s quality depth as well. Each one of these players adds significant depth and versatility to the roster.
Dean Cox, introduced as Western Australia coach in 2021 for a four-year term, said it was an honour to coach his state’s side.
