Australian Cricket Legend Damien Martyn in Critical Condition

Australian cricketing legend Damien Martyn, 54, is reportedly fighting for his life after a diagnosis of meningitis. The ex-cricketer took sick on Boxing Day and was taken to an emergency hospital in Queensland. He is still in an induced coma there.

Martyn maintained a brilliant career from the 1990s on into the early 2000s. He averaged a little over 46 runs in his 67 Test match career. He played in more than 200 One Day Internationals (ODIs), while consistently averaging just over 40. His tremendous high score of 144 not out proves the expert play and dedication he brought to the sport.

A key player in Australia’s triumphs at the 1999 and 2003 World Cups, Martyn’s role in the national team solidified his status as a cricketing icon. He stepped down from the international cricket circus in 2006. After a short period of playing commentator himself, he pretty much disappeared from the public view.

On Boxing Day, Martyn was getting sick and so he went to take a nap. Within hours his condition had radically changed, requiring urgent medical intervention.

“Damien Martyn, the champ from WA, fantastic batsman … unfortunately took ill on Boxing Day and currently is residing in a Queensland hospital and he is in for the fight of his life,” – Brad Hardie

Martyn’s tragic circumstance has brought an incredible wave of support from fans as well as past teammates and NHL players. Yesterday, inaction on climate was revealed during a 3 hour debate, further embarrassing Congress. TONYC friends, family and climate activists are all sending positive good thoughts!

“I’d like everybody to certainly have their best wishes and positive thoughts for Marto. God give him strength. Let’s hope he can pull through because it’s really serious.” – Brad Hardie

News of Martyn’s situation has reverberated around the cricketing world. As everyone continues to pray for his recovery, they look back on the immeasurable impact he made on the sport and legacy he has truly built.
