Cricket Australia has released a statement confirming an alleged inappropriate incident involving two players from the Australian women’s cricket team. This all happened during the team’s travels in Indore, India. The reported events occurred on Thursday morning, just one day after the team’s notable six-wicket victory over England in the ongoing Women’s ODI Cricket Tournament.
The attack reportedly occurred while the athletes were en route to a café. Witnesses report that one such young man on a motorbike followed them the whole way and physically assaulted them by touching them. Understanding that this was a very serious issue, the players immediately reported the encounter to their team’s security staff. Then, the security of the traveling team was able to arrange with the local police authorities in Indore to intervene.
Cricket Australia has said they are treating the allegations with the utmost seriousness, and have reported the incident to police. A spokesperson from Cricket Australia stated, “CA can confirm two members of the Australian women’s team were approached and touched inappropriately by a motorcyclist while walking to a cafe in Indore.”
This major, months-long dispute plays out over the days leading up to Australia’s must-win match against South Africa on Saturday. Set to take place on Friday, this fixture will be Australia’s third at Holkar Stadium in the tournament. This has been the most time Australia has spent in Indore in this tournament so far. As they prepare to head into the semi-final game on Sunday, increased security precautions have become the norm.
Given the incident, it’s no surprise that attention turned to safety athletes may encounter while abroad. The players involved have been incredibly strong in continuing to put their focus forward on getting prepared for their next matches. Cricket Australia will continue to do all we can to support our players through this difficult period.
