Following the diagnosis of the blood clots, he was admitted to a local hospital. Shortly after that he was moved to Geelong Hospital, where doctors performed 12 major surgeries on him. After his discharge, Cunnington retreated from public life to recuperate on his farm outside Warrnambool.
Cunnington formally announced his AFL retirement during the 2023 season. His decorated career is highlighted by being a dual Syd Barker medallist and kicking 76 goals in a season playing with Warrnambool last year.
