Ben Cunnington, an Aboriginal icon in Australian Rules Football, was given a hero’s welcome at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday. It was a treat for the fans to see him there! The 33-year-old North Melbourne great cut a dashing figure upon his return to the Kangaroos’ rooms. This was just three months after he had his own near-death experience with multiple blood clots. His presence was not only a tangible sign of his progress, but a reminder of all the special moments of his legendary career.

Just a few months ago, Cunnington was fighting for his life. He exhibited tremendous bravery by battling two rounds of testicular cancer late in his playing career. Following the diagnosis of the blood clots, he was admitted to a local hospital. Shortly after that he was moved to Geelong Hospital, where doctors performed 12 major surgeries on him. After his discharge, Cunnington retreated from public life to recuperate on his farm outside Warrnambool.

Cunnington formally announced his AFL retirement during the 2023 season. His decorated career is highlighted by being a dual Syd Barker medallist and kicking 76 goals in a season playing with Warrnambool last year. Fans everywhere welcomed his return to the club, showering him with love and adoration at every stop. Acknowledging that he is the “heart and soul” of their team.

On Sunday, Cunnington was spotted reaching out to greet fellow player Tom Lynch, signaling his reintegration into the football community. Xander McGuire, one of the young fans watching the event unfold, summed up exactly what makes Cunnington’s return so important.
