Bernard Tomic Set to Compete in Cincinnati Following Challenging Exit

After over a year away from competitive tennis, Bernard Tomic will make his long-anticipated return at next week’s Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati. This ladies’ tournament doubles as a traditional hard court warmup to the US Open. Tomic’s inclusion is a testament to his relentless drive to be the best, despite recently hitting rock-bottom.

This 32-year-old Australian will be accompanied by seven other countrymen in the main draw. Among them, is the equally impressive success of his compatriots—fellow Aussies and ATP stars, Alex de Minaur and Alexei Popyrin. Chris O’Connell and Adam Walton will line up in the men’s draw. Their involvement makes for a more commonly Australian scene at this prestigious event.

Tomic’s recent performance has been tumultuous. Lately, he experienced one of the most miserable moments when his ATP Challenger Tour match against Alex Dostanic. Tomic tripped over his own feet in the process, just as he was approaching match point. This tragic error led him to have to withdraw from the tournament. This incident is representative of the very real and continuous struggles he faces while playing the game. It’s a reminder of just how unpredictable sports are.

In his most recent match against Taylor Fritz, Tomic was on the receiving end of crushing disappointment. He physically broke down and had to retire mid-game. Currently ranked 211 in the world, Tomic has struggled to regain his form and maintain consistency at a high level of play. With his 33rd birthday coming up in October, he has plenty at stake in the make-or-break season.

Back in Cincinnati, Tomic hopes to make the most of the opportunity as he looks to build back some momentum and confidence. Going up against younger players every day will give him the best opportunity to show what he’s capable of doing and his commitment to succeed.
