Brisbane Secures Double Chance as Hawthorn Faces Elimination

Brisbane has pulled out a stunning upset to defeat three-time defending premier Hawthorn. This win has guaranteed the Lions a double chance heading into the finals series. That match at the Gabba had so many moments, I think of that controversial free kick that turned everything in the final minutes. As a consequence, Hawthorn is forced to sweat it out in an elimination final.

Even with regular star player Lachie Neale out, Brisbane showed off some picture-perfect teamwork and poise. Zac Bailey and Levi Ashcroft provided incisive, damaging performances, helping the Lions control the play on their terms for most of the game. We’ll go through each player starting with Will Ashcroft and Josh Dunkley who were both instrumental and set the stage for the entire squad.

After a hard-fought five days of tennis, the tie became highly combative as it entered into the waning minutes. With only six minutes left, a very questionable free kick was called against Hawthorn’s Amon in their defensive 50. Most looked past this harsh penalty for something they felt was a simple skill mistake execution, but this was roundly challenged by critics. Brisbane’s Bruce Reville took full advantage of the free kick, snapping a major which only intensified the pressure on Hawthorn, who were reeling.

Luke Hodge, a former player and current commentator, went on the offensive over the decision.

“I think (Amon) was definitely trying to get it to his teammate, it just slipped out of his hands. It was a skill error more so than insufficient intent.” – Kane Cornes

The free kick controversy has taken away from what was otherwise a high-intensity, physical contest. Brisbane’s Hugh McCluggage shone brightly with 32 disposals and two goals, while teammate Jason Rayner contributed significantly with 22 touches, two goals, and two assists. Darcy Wilmot impressed with 27 disposals.

On the contrary end of the ground, Jack Ginnivan was at the head of Hawthorn’s charge with 23 disposals and two goals. Hawthorn’s performance fell short as they struggled to keep up with Brisbane’s relentless offense.
