Cameron Munster, Queensland captain, flew into Sydney Tuesday evening. He’s pumped for the sold out, winner take all, State of Origin series decider! His return was planned long before, but just days after the unexpected death of his father, Steven, this past weekend. Munster’s four-year commitment to lead his team through this difficult period certainly says a lot about his toughness and competitive nature.
After his father’s death earlier this season, Munster was given leave from the Maroons camp to be with his family. In response, QLD coach Billy Slater, and the entire team, stood firmly with him, showing poise and reassurance in the wake of such a tragic loss. After all, no one better than Slater understands the burden of such mourning that Munster now shoulders. He experienced a similar loss earlier this year with the death of his own father, Ronnie.
The Queensland side had gone to great lengths to get Munster there, chartering a private flight for the Storm No. This enabled him to still be on time for Tuesday afternoon’s captain’s run. Slater took the time to sit with Munster in his room at the Queensland camp on Sunday, offering both companionship and understanding.

While it was an emotional roller coaster ride, Munster was adamant about getting Queensland on the park. After coming to terms with his familial loss, he made a promise to not succumb to despair and continue leading his country as captain.
