Carlton Parts Ways with Young Talent After Coach’s Critique

Carlton Football Club today announced a mutually agreed parting of ways with one of their brightest young prospects Binns. This decision follows a tumultuous season where criticism was directed at head coach Michael Voss. The 20-year-old midfield dynamo, taken No. 32 overall in 2022, proved his mettle both at home and abroad. He finished his AFL season in Round 15 against North Melbourne, lining up against a former Tiger. After this game, he was sent to the reserves and stayed there for the balance of the season.

In July, Voss gave Binns and other undercooked players an absolute bake during a game. Binns characterized this moment as a genuine “show of respect,” recognizing that Voss demands more from him. For me I think just because it’s a mark of respect that Vossy thinks I can do better than this. That’s footy so chin up, you get on with it and keep bouncing back and doing your part,” said Binns.

Binns struggled to gain a consistent role in Voss’ senior team. In July 2023 he won a contract extension through the end of 2026, no less. This extension was announced before he had yet even played a senior match in the season. Binns has appeared in just eight games in three years with the Blues. His impact on the VFL has been enough to land his name in contention. His impressive year saw him gain selection in the 2023 VFL Team of the Year. On top of that he won the Blues’ VFL Best and Fairest.

Voss has been an unwavering champion of Binns from the start of their time together, creating a safe space for honest dialogue about his performance. We sat down and really got some clarity about where I had messed up and what I needed to improve upon. Vossy’s been amazing with me in particular,” Binns said.

The call for Binns to leave has been made after a time of contemplation and conversation with club leadership. His amazing potential quickly earned him acclaim, as by the age of 23, he was the world’s top-ranked tennis player. Nonetheless, his battle to remain in the first-team picture forced a compromise.
