Changing Dynamics: Nathan Cleary Reflects on Relationship with Jarome Luai

Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai, once formidable teammates at the Penrith Panthers, have seen their relationship evolve since their championship days. The pair claimed four NRL premierships together. They lost just 5 matches in their 89 matches, winning in stunning fashion with a 78-match win streak. As they prepare to face each other at the NRL level for the first time, Cleary acknowledges the respect that remains between them despite their current paths diverging.

The two players have a strong history that dates back to childhood. They both played for Penrith Brothers and St Marys Saints. Cleary moved in from Auckland and with Luai, they ruled over one of the game’s most successful dynasties at the Panthers. Their decade together proved tumultuous. Cleary’s squad consistently outclassed Luai’s, including a shocking 50-0 loss that hit Luai hard.

Looking back on their collective memories, Cleary said the respect that lingers is much greater than what has been lost with all the recent changes.

“There’s just always that mutual respect there. We don’t talk all the time but whenever we do or whenever we see each other, it’s always love.” – Nathan Cleary

Their long-standing rivalry was deepened in 2022, when they met in the World Cup final. As it turned out, Cleary’s Australia had defeated Luai’s Samoa in the final, creating a new chapter in their nascent competitive rivalry. Luai makes the switch to halfback for the Wests Tigers this season. His leadership has been invaluable in helping the team stave off three-straight wooden spoons. During this process, Cleary developed an interest in Luai’s current team, the Penrith Panthers, and their potential.

“It’s been good to see them playing some good footy, particularly when they’ve got momentum. They’re one of the best teams in the comp, I reckon,” said Cleary.

As they look towards their return fixture, Cleary expects a tense sparring ring-style atmosphere — albeit with calls of “show-off” thrown by onlookers.

“I don’t really start the chirp but if he starts it then we’ll see.” – Nathan Cleary

Though Cleary embraces their good natured competition, he finds himself unable to shake memories resurged from earlier in their careers. He chuckled to remember the time Luai was so upset after losing to his team that he was reduced to tears.

“He (Luai) might have cried. I’m not sure that’ll happen again.” – Nathan Cleary

As they prepare to clash on the field, both players carry with them a legacy built on teamwork and competition. Though their paths may have taken them in different directions, the respect and camaraderie created while at Penrith has clearly held strong.
