Community Mourns the Loss of Gordon Carey, Beloved Coach and Father

The world of sports is mourning the loss of Gordon Carey, who recently succumbed to his fight against leukemia. Carey, a highly-regarded community member active in local cricket and football, died on November 26 after several years battling the disease. Australian Test cricketer Alex Carey paid emotional and moving tributes to his father. Then he stated the great effect his father had on his life and the lives of so many people.

Gordon Carey, who fought through leukemia, had to miss Alex’s Test debut in 2021. During that period, the activist was receiving intensive chemotherapy treatments. Even with all he dealt with, he was a bedrock of strength and inspiration for everyone in his life. Alex recalled his dad being a real “trooper” during the whole treatment process, which was no doubt a testament to Gordon’s fight and spirit.

He was also heavily involved with the Marion Cricket Club for which he was the senior men’s coach. Gordon’s impact stretched far beyond the coaching bench. Through this commitment, he became a mentor to countless players and a cherished fixture in the community. His passion for youth sports was evident when he coached the reserves team at Willunga Football Club. In 2013, he starred, leading them to a surprising premiership, all the while continuing to passionately support his sons at Flagstaff Hill Football Club.

Gordon was wonderfully kind and generous to all involved in the Marion Cricket Club. He was a true friend to many, a teacher of the game, and made us all laugh in our interactions. Ashley, his daughter, made sure that the family remained very involved at the club. This effort cemented Gordon’s legacy even more with the community.

Alex Carey on the impact that his father had on his own life, remembering their relationship.

“Dad’s been not only a mate but a coach of mine growing up, a mentor.” – Alex Carey

With profound admiration, Alex observed that, illness notwithstanding, Gordon was there in heart and soul. No one ever in spirit.

“He’ll be watching. No doubt he’ll be on the phone there and I’ll get a message probably the night before the game telling me what to do.” – Alex Carey

He made sure to point out that his dad and mom were proud of his extraordinary effort in cricket.

“Look he’s super proud, as is mum.” – Alex Carey

The community is coming together in an effort to honor Gordon Carey’s legacy. To his players, they will always remember him not only as a passionate coach, but as a father figure and friend. His legacy will forever live on through the team he helped cultivate at Marion Cricket Club and all the lives he impacted.
