She was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. It’s no wonder that Tuesday’s announcement follows a recent screening—thanks to a new technology detected a stage that is more treacherous. Car will start urgent treatment for her complex condition, for which she was thankful it was caught early.
The durable cancer survivor calmed her constituents’ fears. She assured them that her office in Londonderry is open and welcomes any concerns they want to voice while she’s treating them. She appreciates your understanding and looks forward to getting back to her advocacy tasks as soon as she can.
“A recent screening has detected breast cancer, and I will now begin immediate treatment,” Car stated. She went on to express her appreciation for the support she has received, saying, “I want to thank the premier and all my parliamentary colleagues for their unwavering support and look forward to being back as soon as possible.”
Premier of NSW, Chris Minns voiced his support with Car during this trying time. “The thoughts of the entire government are with our colleague and our friend Prue Car as she begins treatment following her breast cancer diagnosis,” he said. He expressed his confidence in Car’s resilience, adding, “I know Prue very well. She is indeed a scrapper. I’m confident that as always, she’ll meet this new challenge with all the focus and elegance she’s put to every task before her.
In her announcement, Car highlighted the role that early detection has played. “Thankfully, because the cancer was caught early, my doctors are optimistic about my recovery — and so am I,” she remarked. As a mother, she empowered other women and mothers to take care of themselves by staying up-to-date on screenings. “Breast cancer screenings are vital for early detection and treatment, and I strongly encourage all women to stay up to date with their checks,” she added.
Even with her diagnosis, Car refuses to step down from her position in government. She served to reassure her constituents, letting them know that they could still call her office in Londonderry while she undergoes treatment.
