On the field, the Western Bulldogs proved the strength of doing that. They absolutely crushed the Greater Western Sydney Giants and enjoyed a fantastic 88-point win. The contest at Marvel Stadium showcased outstanding outings from plenty of stars. There was a cloud of injury worries overhanging all of that jubilation, particularly for Toby McMullin and Jesse Hogan.
Just before halftime, backup quarterback Toby McMullin went down with what was initially believed to be a career-threatening ankle injury, sending fans and teammates into shock. His status is unknown at this time, as the team is still evaluating the extent of the damage. At the other end, Aaron Naughton and Sam Darcy became fundamental parts of the Bulldogs’ fairy tale run. Naughton and Darcy both kicked five goals each, showcasing their deadly combination on the field. They have now netted an amazing total of 60 goals between them over their last 8 fixtures.
Marcus Bontempelli’s inclusion only served to deepen his stature as a crucial cog in the wheel for the Dogs. He registered a match-high nine clearances and two goal assists to go with 27 disposals. Teammate Tom Liberatore had a huge impact on the game, with eight clearances, two goal assists and 26 disposals.
Though it was a famous win for the Bulldogs, trouble was lurking all night long. Giants pitcher Sam Taylor had one of the worst performances in playoff history. He later found his way to the bench due to a left knee injury. Jesse Hogan was certainly affected by physical challenges as well on a brutal day for the big forward. When he came to the bench with eight minutes left, he was crying. His reaction immediately called into question his fitness and ability to compete in the future.
“He has had some issues with the body in the past, Jesse,” – Nick Riewoldt
Brian Taylor commented on Hogan’s emotional state, noting the juxtaposition between Hogan’s physical condition and the Giants’ assessment of him being “a little bit sore.”
“The Giants saying he’s a little bit sore and him looking like he’s almost a little bit teary, to me, doesn’t quite equate,” – Brian Taylor
Aaron Naughton was looking forward to working with Darcy on the Woewodin award.
“We obviously haven’t played a lot together. We’re starting to really feel each other’s patterns, getting some good isolation for the both of us. He’s pretty dangerous up there with his pure length. It’s great fun playing with him,” – Aaron Naughton
Bontempelli said the win was critical, especially considering it was against a side that is still contending for the finals. He was adamant that his team not lose this momentum.
“(Beating a finals team) definitely helps in the context of the season — it’s critical for us to keep winning,” – Marcus Bontempelli
