Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow Eyes Fullback Role in Deciding Origin Match

Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow has quickly developed into one of Queensland rugby league’s most electric talents. He is currently contesting a key fullback spot as the series heads into its decider match. His line breaking ability has brought so much to the Queensland backline for the past two tests. His impressive play has been instrumental in the Dolphins climbing the playoff picture after a tumultuous start to the season.

The 2024 State of Origin series has seen Tabuai-Fidow shift to fullback mid-game, particularly after Reece Walsh suffered a high tackle from Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii. Despite his nine caps in Origin, Tabuai-Fidow has never begun at the back, but is hungry to make the most of a chance. His recent form, capped by three tries in a recent match, has strengthened his argument.

Billy Slater, Queensland’s coach, praised Tabuai-Fidow’s capabilities. He noted, “I thought he moved quite well yesterday. The thing with Reece is he’s dangerous with the footy in hand.” This endorsement really emphasizes the kind of influence Tabuai-Fidow might have in a clutch game situation.

Just last week, Tabuai-Fidow celebrated another landmark achievement as he clocked up his 100th NRL game in a win against South Sydney. Instead, this notable achievement has only stoked his ambition even more. As for the opportunity to wear the No. 1 jersey, he was beyond excited at that prospect. It would be extremely special to me having that No. 1 on my back.” —Travis Hunter.

When Reece Walsh went down with his own injury recently there were fears he would miss out on the next fixture. However, he downplayed the severity of the injury, describing it as “just a little contusion on my knee, nothing bad.” Walsh added that he was cautious during training, saying, “I was just half looking after myself, making sure I’m not doing anything unnecessary.”

The upcoming Origin decider offers an opportunity for Queensland to solidify their standing and for Tabuai-Fidow to make a significant mark in his career. His ascension from an early-season struggle with the Dolphins to potentially starting at fullback in such a crucial match illustrates his growth and determination as an athlete.
