Hawthorn’s hot streak continued as they thoroughly outclassed St Kilda in their latest AFL clash. They earned an impressive win, 14.10 to 10.14. The game took place at the Marvel Stadium, where both teams showcased their skills, but it was Hawthorn that emerged victorious under the guidance of coach Sam Mitchell.
Right from the start, Hawthorn set the dominant tone early, taking a 2.5 to 1.2 advantage at quarter time. Throughout the rest of the game, they maintained that momentum. They netted the final three goals of the opening stanza, pushing their lead to 6.6 to 3.6 at the half.
Jack Gunston was a huge factor for the Hawks, proving to be the game-changer with three goals. It was extremely fitting then that Mabior Chol marked his 100-game milestone with an impactful two-goal performance. Meanwhile, Nick Watson did the same for the Hawks, scoring 2 goals in quick succession. Their offensive production was the difference in leading the team to a historic win.
At the other end of the scale, Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera of St Kilda, on debut, put in just a stunning display. He racked up 43 disposals and assisted his side in winning more than 1004 metres. Jack Higgins had two goals, and the dynamic Max Hall made a huge difference with 27 touches and three goals.
St Kilda’s midfielders Jai Newcombe and Connor Nash were influential in the game. Newcombe had 22 disposals and seven clearances. It was fellow Nugget Nash who fully embraced the grind with a 19-disposal, eight-clearance game. Lloyd Meek impressed with 20 disposals and five clearances.
It is going to take a lot of work for St Kilda to be able to match the voracious attack of Hawthorn. Max Ramsden made a big impression with five marks, including three contested ones and scoring a goal. Shola was, surprisingly, withdrawn during the game itself, though.
Ben Dixon commented on Ramsden’s reaction after being substituted, noting, “Ramsden just gone to the back of the bench with a bit of a smile on his face saying ‘you’re kidding aren’t you?’”
Hawthorn’s victory not only highlights their tactical superiority under Mitchell but raises questions about St Kilda’s performance and strategy moving forward in the season.
