Keidean Coleman will finally make his return to the AFL after 436 days on the sidelines. The 25-year-old has been named for his first senior match since he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in the opening round of last season. Coleman replaces Jarrod Berry, who is missing with a concussion.
Coleman’s return could be timely, with West Coast set to host St Kilda in the last of 2023 at Optus Stadium this Saturday. The club became victim of a brutal season, as they sit last on the ladder, winless (0-9). Oscar Allen, who had to withdraw last week due to a knee injury, returns this week! He will be accompanied by fellow recruits Aidan Johnson, Jake Melksham and Harry Petty in the line up.
North Melbourne goes into their meeting with Richmond unchanged despite the trials they continue to endure. Richmond has shuffled their lineup, with Kaleb Smith moving in to replace James Trezise. Jacob van Rooyen, Koltyn Tholstrup, and Matthew Jefferson have all been omitted from the squad. Van Rooyen, who had impressive seasons in his debut year with 28 goals followed by 30 the next, has struggled this season, managing just four goals in six games.
West Coast coach noted, “There were some things in his game that were heading in the right direction but we want to see a little bit more,” highlighting the team’s cautious approach as they integrate returning players into their strategy.
With Coleman and Allen returning, Aidan Johnson is returning to the fold. This will be his third appearance in the AFL and further bolsters an equally impressive West Coast squad. Simon Goodwin emphasized the importance of stability in the lineup: “We don’t want to bring young players in and out of the team.” This mentality is indicative of a broader long-term strategy of prioritizing development by providing players with continuous avenues to develop.
The Eagles will be looking for these changes to see them bounce back as they take on St Kilda. Dougal Howard (hamstring) and Liam Stocker (foot) will stay out, prolonging to test the depth of the list.
“He’s working incredibly hard, he’s a big part of our future and there’s no question that he’ll be back in the AFL team in the not-too-distant future.” – [West Coast coach]
