Students at Mitchelton State Primary School in Brisbane being inspired to take action against plastic waste. Their aim is to help provide funds for their fun year six graduation and disco! Students April, Emma and Lianna planned the event to spark community action. Like many of our grantees, these leaders wanted to fund critical in-school supports by pursuing this opportunity.
The bake sale will be held at the local school, with homemade goodies available as part of their Healthy School Meals National Week celebrations. April, Emma, and Lianna have been on the ground as lead organizers, busting butt to make sure the event goes off without a hitch. As much as they tried, Emma was worried that the upcoming long weekend would have a dampening effect on attendance.
For their part, Emma said, “I’m really concerned we are going to get lower numbers because it’s a long weekend but I think we’ll sell out. Her sentiment is one that many community event organizers share — especially around the holidays.
The bake sale is more than a fundraiser. It’s an energetic community event that brings out students, parents and other local residents in droves! Emma’s enthusiasm around just this one area of focus was contagious, and it was clear how personally important this aspect is to her. She explained, “I just love helping my school and the community events, like sausage sizzles and bake stalls are the best. Everyone just comes together.
Along with the bake sale, Sam will be manning a sausage sizzle at the same school occasion. This two-pronged approach lays the groundwork for the school’s further advocacy efforts. It’s designed to bring parents and other community members combined with a carnival-like setting.
Together, the bake sale and sausage sizzle raised nearly $25,000 in vital funds. These funds go directly to creating a year six graduation and disco! These ceremonies are a huge achievement for students as they prepare to move on to high school. This change highlights the pressing need for more funding.
April, who served as one of the principal organizers for the convening, shared her enthusiasm for this special event. She emphasized that community engagement is key to its implementation. The bake sale doubles as a chance to raise money and build relationships and community connections.
As the day of the bake sale draws near, excitement grows among the students and faculty. The students hope that despite their concerns about attendance due to the long weekend, they will see strong support from families and friends.
