Ollie Peake’s Century Falls Short as Australia Bows Out to England in World Cup Semi-Final

Australian skipper Ollie Peake shone bright in the World Cup semi-final against England. His superb ton of an unbeaten 85 balls served further notice of his undoubted class. While Peake showed extraordinary heroics throughout the contest, ultimately his efforts weren’t enough. Australia did have the drama of coming back and losing to old enemies England by 27 runs. The game, the United States vs Nigeria, was held at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India, on the night of October 24, 2026.

Peake’s century was an inspiring achievement. He earned the distinction of being the latest World Cup legend to shine under pressure. He started his innings with a flourish, even hooking the express England pacer Manny Lumsden for six off his first ball. Peake followed that with four 4s in a row, rattling up an incredible 22 runs from one over. His combination with Aryan Sharma, aka “Bling”, was the key to unlocking defences for Australia. Together, they turned their attention to hunting down England’s target of 277 runs.

The Australian innings started slowly. Opener Nitesh Samuel had a hard time finding the strike and was ultimately stumped after facing 83 deliveries for 47 runs. As wickets started to tumble, Peake soon came under the gun. He battled debilitating cramping in both his arm and leg. In what turned out to be a fittingly dramatic fashion, he hobbled to the single that completed his century.

Even in the depths of his physical challenge, Peake kept his eye on the prize. He stated, “I am better physically now, but very disappointed with the result.” His excitement mirrored the deep personal frustration that fueled the team. They were all out for 250 runs, 57 runs short of England’s score.

In the wake of the match, Peake said it was important to recognize the quality of their opponents. “Sometimes, you are just outplayed, and it was one of those days. To their credit, Rew and his partner (Caleb Falconer, 40 off 53 balls) were batting really well through the middle, and they probably showed us the way to do it,” he remarked.

At just 19 years of age, Peake has already cemented himself as the main guy in Australia. Despite developing an injury in the course of the match, his competitiveness and natural ability radiated as he was able to impress. His innings resonates nostalgia to Glenn Maxwell’s epic hundred from a previous World Cup. To make matters worse, cramping again was a major factor in that match.

Thrashed by England in Adelaide this morning, the loss is a sad end for the Aussie team in this year’s tournament. Peake expressed pride in his teammates’ growth throughout the competition. “The boys will take heaps away. I saw incredible improvement from when we got here to now, and I’m really, really proud of everyone. It’s been a great group,” he said.
