Port Adelaide Football Club has made Luke Webster its new assistant coach. This decision is another big step in the continued reset of the team under senior coach Josh Carr. This announcement follows the departure of former coach Ken Hinkley last month, alongside notable exits including Chad Cornes and Travis Boak.
Webster, who spent a decade with West Coast ahead of her time at NRL headquarters, will bring all that experience to the new role. Along the way, he’s served in multiple roles in the West Coast coaching pipeline. His extensive experience includes being WAFL coach, development coach, forward line coach, and most recently, backline coach. He’s no stranger to the Australian Football League (AFL) landscape. His playing career, which saw him play 33 games in the 2000s with Fremantle, really underscored that experience.
Carr, who took over as Port Adelaide’s senior coach after Hinkley’s departure, expressed confidence in Webster’s capabilities.
“I know Luke really well from our time together at Fremantle and he’s an outstanding person and coach,” – Josh Carr
Carr pointed to Webster’s track record of building relationships with players and high regard among the coaching community.
“His character is first-class. He’s someone who builds genuine relationships with players and has an outstanding reputation as an assistant coach across multiple areas of the game,” – Josh Carr
Carr further amplified the value of Webster’s experience for the club’s largely young and developing roster.
“Luke’s experience and knowledge will be invaluable for our emerging playing group as we continue to build our program,” – Josh Carr
Webster spoke positively about taking the next step in his own coaching development and meeting Carr at Port Adelaide. He has been the subject of discussions with the club for the past few years. He’s looking to seize this opportunity as a jump off point to that next step in his career.
“I’m incredibly excited to be joining Port Adelaide and working with senior coach Josh Carr,” – Luke Webster
“I’ve been in talks with Port Adelaide for a couple of years now and the opportunity to be part of this club’s new chapter is something I couldn’t pass up,” – Luke Webster
While both coaches are excited about starting this new chapter. Stay tuned in coming weeks as Port Adelaide continues unveiling innovations to its football program. Webster’s appointment is Carr’s first big testy decision since he assumed control. This action reflects his resolve to restore and fortify the team to face the upcoming challenges.
