Queensland Prodigy Coby Black Signs with Raiders After Broncos Departure

Coby Black, one of the most promising young talents in Australian rugby league has officially departed the Brisbane Broncos. He is now poised to return home to join the Canberra Raiders. The 19-year-old has made his mark representing Queensland proud at the state under-19s. Despite being under contract with the Broncos through the end of 2026, on November 1, he officially became a free agent. This change represents an exciting new chapter for his career. His goal is to sharpen his skills while learning from Raiders mentor Ricky Stuart, who is widely considered one of the game’s best ever halves.

Last year, Black became a household name for his phenomenal play. He was scoring an astounding 46 points per game for partner club Burleigh on the Mal Meninga Cup. His remarkable talents on the pitch have made him a household name. Most are now seeing him as the long-term successor to veteran Broncos playmaker Adam Reynolds. With his surprising recent exit, the Broncos must turn their focus toward other up-and-coming gems.

Simon Scanlan, Brisbane Broncos general manager of recruitment was glad, but hurt, at losing Black.

“Coby has come through our Academy program from the age of 14 and has worked really hard to progress through to our NRL top squad,” – Simon Scanlan

Black begins a exciting new chapter forward though with the Raiders. At the same time, the Broncos are pulling off fun moves in free agency to improve their roster as well. The team has added former North Queensland playmaker Tom Duffy for the 2026 season. With Ezra Mam and Adam Reynolds at the helm, next season could be one to forget for the team. A versatile veteran Ben Hunt remains a valuable weapon.

“While we’re sad to see him leave, we thank him for his dedication and commitment and sincerely wish him every success as he takes the next step in his career.” – Simon Scanlan

The Broncos have scored a massive coup with Melbourne Storm star Jonah Pezet! He will play for Parramatta next year before moving to Brisbane in 2027. Beyond the cap situation, there are other tactical moves the Broncos are making to position themselves for long-term success. Their goal is to replace the hole created by Black’s exit.

Moreover, the Broncos have secured Melbourne Storm star Jonah Pezet, who will play with Parramatta next year before transitioning to Brisbane in 2027. With such moves, the Broncos are positioning themselves strategically for future success while hoping to fill the void left by Black’s departure.
