Sharks Face Setback as Tom Mulitalo Prepares for Knee Surgery

The Cronulla Sharks are still reeling after their star winger Tom Mulitalo’s gruesome leg injury during a recent match. The 25-year-old athlete limped off the field late in Sunday’s 24-18 victory in Auckland, prompting immediate concerns about his future in the upcoming NRL season.

In their official statement, the Sharks announced Mulitalo will have a knee operation in the next week. After the procedure, he’ll be starting on a lengthy recovery process. The club expressed hope that Mulitalo would be able to return to play at some point during the 2026 NRL season, despite the challenges posed by his injury.

“Mulitalo will undergo surgery within the next week before beginning an extended recovery period. However, he will work with Sharks medical staff in an effort to return to the field at some point during the 2026 NRL season,” – Cronulla Sharks club statement.

Mulitalo established he would be able to withstand NRL-level pressure after he sustained the injury in a heavy collision while playing a representative level. Consequently, the Sharks are able to be awarded salary cap dispensation. Given the extended stretch of roster juggling the club now needs to figure out in his absence, this financial relief would be a boon.

With Mulitalo confirmed out, it’s likely that Sam Stonestreet is going to be the next man up. He’ll join Sione Katoa to form the Sharks’ first-choice starting wingers in 2026. Stonestreet’s elevation to this position underscores the depth and talent within the Sharks’ roster, even as they grapple with the loss of one of their key players.

The Sharks remain hopeful that Mulitalo, 24, will make a full recovery. They are committed to providing him with continued care and resources needed to make it through this difficult time. As he begins working closely with the club’s medical staff, both fans and teammates await updates on his progress and potential timeline for return.
