For his part, Simon Goodwin is still looking to land on his feet after three NFL seasons. This news comes just eight days after his sacking from the Melbourne Football Club. The former coach’s future appears inextricably linked to his spouse, Kristine Brooks. She is a key player in Sydney’s own burgeoning finance sector.
Goodwin married Brooks in Bali at the beginning of 2018. Look, ever since Gabriella and them married back in January, she hasn’t been much out here. The pair, who have been dating since 2021, have mostly kept their relationship out of the public eye. However, sources indicate that Goodwin may be on the verge of a new role with the Greater Western Sydney Giants (GWS) for the upcoming season.
Rumours have already circulated that Goodwin has been talking to GWS about a role there next season. This would represent a major move for the coach as he looks to stay involved with the AFL industry after his dismissal.
At the same time, Nathan Buckley has become the clear frontrunner to replace Goodwin at Melbourne. Once a Collingwood legend as a player, Buckley is highly respected in the football community. Former Collingwood player Dale Thomas, who was coached by Buckley, has voiced his faith in Buckley’s ability to turn the Demons into a competitive side.
“If they do go and get him, I think he’ll be a great fit,” – Dale Thomas
Thomas highlighted Buckley’s extensive experience and the lessons he gained during his decade-long tenure as Collingwood’s coach. Further, he tells me, Buckley has what it takes to maintain a strong vision for the club’s long-term direction.
“He certainly … learnt some lessons in that first part of his year (as coach) … it ended up being 10 years coaching Collingwood,” – Dale Thomas
Goodwin is still likely to stick around in the AFL system, though. No doubt his future endeavors will be influenced by Brooks’ smash-hit career.
“There’s been a significant increase to the soft cap for football spending for 2026, so the Giants could afford it too,” – Cleary
