Second year senior Steven May, rocky road ahead to AFL career Steven May is not a young veteran – but he is in uncharted territory. After last year’s chaotic season and recent sexual harassment allegations, these fears have begun to weigh heavily on fans and players. On the morning of day of protest, police raided May’s home on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. This incident only worsened his position with the club.
May, who played just 16 senior games last season, has been an unsung hero down back this season. He now has a career total of 251 regular season matches to his name. That was already an unfair cross to bear as he fought for his place on the roster this season. This most recent misjudgment has fueled speculation about his long-term position with the team. Perfect timing too, as it comes just six weeks before the start of the AFL season.
Sources tell FootballScoop that the Demons brass have yet to formally interview May. This after as a result of two month long allegations are found by an alleged fight. It’s not entirely clear what led to this change of heart. As May has been on indefinite leave from the club to address a “very sensitive personal situation.” Due to that, there is no timeline set for his return and thus, we do not know his immediate future.
On Wednesday, May was specifically not included in the open training sessions. This not only puts the player’s safety at risk but puts the team on edge as they prepare for the regular season. It gets even worse with May and Dion Prestia being slapped with criminal charges. This case developed after a racialized brawl erupted into the Sorrento community in late 2024.
Mitch Cleary, a sports journalist, noted the precariousness of May’s position within the team:
“This latest matter leaves his spot at the Demons teetering on the brink.” – Mitch Cleary
The dramatic developments playing out back home put added pressure on May. It further adds to the pressure for a beleaguered Demons organization as they deal with this tricky scenario. May will be an unrestricted free agent after this season concludes. Now, both his future and the club’s are shrouded in uncertainty.
