Gold Coast Titans captain Tino Fa’asuamaleaui on the verge of tears. If nobody else was held accountable at the club as recently as head coach Des Hasler’s firing on Sunday. Just two years after the dismissal of former coach Justin Holbrook, Fa’asuamaleaui believes that the responsibility for the team’s performance should extend beyond the coaching staff. He’s demanded the kind of in-depth review of the club’s operations and decision-making processes that should have occurred after Schelotto’s firing.
Fa’asuamaleaui’s comments come during a tumultuous period for the Titans, who have found it hard to have success on-field. The 23-year-old Queensland Maroons regular emphasized the need for change, stating, “Results haven’t been there and … someone has to be held accountable. Talking about accountability, both times our coaches are the only ones who have been kept accountable.”
The captain’s comments express a wish for a deeper, more systemic kind of accountability to take hold in the organization. He added, “I think we have to look at everything going forward. We have to question everything. Are we making the right decisions?”
Fa’asuamaleaui has further articulated his concerns regarding the lack of accountability. In the meantime, speculation over his future with the Titans after the season continues to bubble around. He put pen to paper on a 10-year contract with the team. His contract has a provision that allows him to speak with other franchises beginning November 1 for the 2027 season. According to his manager, Simon Mammino, Fa’asuamaleaui would like to remain a Titan. He stressed that continuity at the institution is crucial for taking such a decision.
The appointment of Josh Hannay as head coach from 2026 onwards would be a major asset in keeping Fa’asuamaleaui for the long-term. The incoming coach has established a rapport with many players, including Fa’asuamaleaui, through their experiences during State of Origin. “I think Josh is ready to become a head coach,” Fa’asuamaleaui remarked. That was the first time I spoke with him, but he seems very committed and eager to come in and really ensure that he’s got the right people surrounding him to get the most out of this group. I’m very excited for him.
Titans Chief Executive Steve Mitchell is hopeful. He trusted Hannay’s former connection to Fa’asuamaleaui would do enough to keep the best captain in Gold Coast colors. Mitchell stated, “I think if we build a program that gives Tino and others the best chance to be the best they can be and succeed, I think he will want to stay.”
As negotiations regarding other players continue, including discussions about David Fifita’s future with the club, Mitchell remains focused on fostering an environment where players can thrive. “I want David firing, even if it means that’s at another club,” he noted, highlighting the importance of player performance regardless of team affiliation.
