Tragedy Strikes AFL Community with Adam Selwood’s Death

The loss has rocked the AFL community with the tragic passing of Adam Selwood aged 35. At a largely preventable age of just 41 years old. His family members released the shocking, heartbreaking news in a loving statement just ahead of the game on Friday morning. This out of nowhere move left players, fans, and coaches totally stunned. The Selwood family’s grief is compounded by the recent loss of Adam’s twin brother, Troy, who took his own life just three months earlier.

Adam Selwood’s influence on everyone he touched was extraordinary. Described as a loving husband and an incredible father to his children, Lenny and Billie, he possessed a unique ability to make others feel special. In their statement, his family said they’re thankful to have witnessed this unique trait every day.

Selwood’s sudden passing has sent shockwaves throughout the AFL world, sparking emotional tributes from plenty including Collingwood coach Craig McRae. The Collingwood Football Club found out about the tragedy on the morning before their match. They didn’t want to tell the players until after the game. This decision is indicative of the often precarious balance between navigating personal loss and professional obligations.

In a candid, post-match interview, McRae took the issue to task. He struggled to contain his emotions as he spoke about Adam Selwood’s death.

“There’s no book written on this stuff … we got the news this morning, horrible. We didn’t really know what to do to be honest, maybe give it some space to see where it all fits with all of us.” – Craig McRae

He praised the move to keep the players insulated from the coverage leading up to the game. In response, he questioned if that really was the best decision.

“It’s horrible … there’s such sadness. We protected the players, thinking that might have been the right thing. I don’t know.” – Craig McRae

The Selwood family has endured unspeakable grief over the past few months. Adam Selwood had the unfathomable burden of putting together the eulogy for his brother Troy’s funeral. He described it as the “hardest thing” he’d ever done. This loss is particularly heavy on all who knew both brothers.

Adam Selwood, a Bendigo native, moved to Perth when he was drafted by West Coast in 2002. His career spanned just 187 games. In 2006 he was able to celebrate a second premiership victory, before retiring at the end of 2013. His impact on the sport and community lives on.

Tributes are coming in from every corner of the league. McRae ended his comments by extending prayers and support to the Selwood family as they navigate this difficult period.

“Just want to send my love to the Selwood family.” – Craig McRae
