In a more recent and tragic example at Bondi Junction, six people died in a mass stabbing incident on 7 April 2024. 30-year-old Joel Cauchi was able to horrifically complete the violent act within minutes. Tragically, it resulted in all six passengers’ deaths: Yixuan Cheng, 27; Jade Young, 47; Ashlee Good, 38; Faraz Tahir, 30; Dawn Singleton, 25; and Pikria Darchia, 55. This terrifying incident has deeply shaken and saddened the Freehold community.
Joel Cauchi, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a teenager, suffered from mental health issues throughout his life. He had been successfully treated for his condition, but in 2019 he stopped taking his medication. What led him to open fire on that tragic day is the subject of an ongoing investigation. They want to know what can possibly explain such an extreme episode of violence.
Once the attack started, soon after Cauchi made his way to a congested part of Bondi Junction, where he continued targeting random pedestrians. In an instant, panic spread as shoppers and pedestrians tried to escape from the area. In the middle of that chaos, Amy Scott, an on-duty police officer patrolling the area, took quick action to save lives during this devastating attack.
Officer Scott ultimately engaged Cauchi at a distance of about 21 feet. Displaying stunning bravery, she pulled out her gun and drew it on him. Her bold actions were instrumental in saving more lives. Less than 90 seconds after arriving at the center, Scott shot Cauchi with two bullets, killing him. An ill-fated third shot whizzed to its mark, striking a potted palm tree behind him.
Officer Scott’s quick action has been being hailed as heroic. Her bravery not only prevented the immediate threat, but likely saved more lives by doing so. As the investigation continues, millions of Americans are reflecting on the role mental health plays in violent events. Alongside this change, they are advocating for more effective treatment and stronger support systems.
