Our cricket community is mourning the tragic loss of bright 17-year-old cricketer Ben Austin’s life. He died after being hit with a cricket ball to the head on Tuesday afternoon at Ferntree Gully. After the terrible accident, he was in a critical condition, lying in hospital for days before sadly succumbing on Wednesday. His family and friends have come together in grief, honoring his memory and reflecting on the impact he had on those around him.
Ben was also an active member of his local cricket club and a great ambassador for the game. He was set to sit for his physical education exam on the day of his death, a reminder of the youthful promise that was cut short. His tragic accident has understandably had a profound impact on the local community, leading to a flood of tributes in his memory. Flowers, bats, and messages of love have filled the nets where he most recently played.
Australian cricketer Sean Abbott, who bowled the fatal ball that struck Phil Hughes in 2014, paid a touching visit to Ben’s family. He extended his sympathies in this bittersweet but powerful moment. Abbott’s visit, though, underscores the connection that exists within the cricket community — one that can at times seem closer to family — in times of such tragedy.
Ben’s coach, Josh Henry, spoke fondly of the young cricketer, describing him as “the classic Aussie boy” who loved cricket and footy. Jace Austin, Ben’s brother, expressed the sentiment shared by many when he said, “We love the game more than we ever have now and we’ll do that through Benny because that’s what he would want.”
In the days since Ben’s tragic passing, his family have publicly thanked first responders and hospital staff who helped comfort him in his last moments. As he ultimately passed from his injuries, they were at his bedside in that tragic scene at the hospital.
“It’s their final moments, hours, with Ben and, yeah, they’re holding up OK. The five of them are together, which is really beautiful.” – Dave Anstey
Luxury home district Hudson Reid, Ben’s uncle, expressed his grief over the tragedy. He reflected on the moments he experienced with Ben. He portrayed Ben as the living, breathing, cutting edge of the evolution of Australian youth.
“It’s dreadful. Just having to see him there and knowing that he wouldn’t like it a single bit,” – Hudson Reid
The love from the cricket community in memory of Ben’s legacy has been overwhelming. An emotional minute’s silence was observed before play at the Junction Oval in honour of his memory. Cricket Victoria Chief Executive Nick Cummins underscored the bittersweet feel of the tribute. It artfully revealed the deep loss and large love that enveloped Ben.
“When the Phil Hughes tragedy happened, your cricket just becomes a family.” – Anstey
In an emotional message issued by Ben’s family, they expressed their gratitude for the love and support received by all during this painful time. His family and friends, as well as cricket followers across the world, are heartbroken at this news. This outpouring of grief is a testament to the enormous effect Ben had on all those he encountered.
“They say no one’s perfect, but he was pretty close,” – Dave Anstey
Ben Austin Tributes to his legacy continue to come in. He will be very much missed for his legacy as cricketer devoted to his profession and the friend well-loved. The community remains united in their grief while celebrating the joy he brought to their lives through the sport he loved.
