Veteran Defender Sam Frost Announces AFL Retirement

Sam Frost is our grizzled veteran defender with five years of Aussie rules under his belt. Having recently turned 32, he announced his retirement from professional football in May. Return to Hawthorn training on Saturday morning, Frost delivered the news. In his speech he thanked the tremendous career he had, and all the great experiences he was able to have over his years in the sport.

During his robust 14-year career, Frost amassed just 185 games played. He spent significant portions of his career with three clubs: Hawthorn, Melbourne, and Greater Western Sydney (GWS). Playing 94 games with Hawthorn, Frost cemented his place in the team’s formidable defensive lineup. He played on in 70 matches with Melbourne, as well as 21 games to his name with Greater Western Sydney.

Frost was ultimately delisted by Hawthorn at the end of last season. This unexpected decision caused him to reevaluate his career and eventually to his recent retirement announcement.

Frost spoke at length on how grateful he was for the opportunities afforded to him during his time in the league.

“I’d like to thank the Greater Western Sydney Football Club, the Melbourne Football Club and the Hawthorn Football Club for affording me the opportunity to live out a childhood dream of playing AFL football.” – Sam Frost

In looking back on his journey, he opened up about his conflicting feelings of joy and sadness as retirement loomed.

“After 14 years and 185 games I’ve had incredible highs and shattering lows and will retire with no regrets, only gratitude for the experiences I have had and the people who have helped shape them.” – Sam Frost

Aside from his professional success, Frost is a family-oriented man. He now lives in North Vancouver with his partner Laura. Together they’re raising their first daughter, Charlotte. With this new chapter in his personal life, a big change begins for him as he transitions away from football.
