West Coast Co-Captain Oscar Allen Undergoes Surgery as Future Remains Uncertain

West Coast Eagles co-captain Oscar Allen has undergone surgery on his left knee. This procedure is meant to resolve long-standing problems with his patella tendon. The 26-year-old forward has had a rough go this season. He’s been dealing with knee pain for quite some time, leading many to speculate if he had played his last game for the club.

Last week, Allen’s injury woes became apparent in a bruising contest against Carlton. He couldn’t avoid further damage to his calf and Achilles in what turned out to be a disappointing 34-point loss. At first, the club was optimistic that he would be able to work his way back onto the pitch this year. The further we got into learning about the severity of his injuries, by the time it was obvious he needed surgery, it needed to happen.

As we learned this past week, he’s not expected to make it back at all this season after the ruptured right calf/Achilles injury. After taking everything into consideration, Oscar and the club determined that he should have surgery performed today,” said a club official.

Allen’s 2021 might seem like a tough year to some, but he refused to be discouraged. Only three weeks ago he demonstrated his talent with a four-goal haul against Geelong. This game brought back memories of his 2023 breakout performance—one that saw him whip up a remarkable 53-goal season. That’s been the flip side for Yelich this year as his body has betrayed him all season long.

With the surgery behind him, West Coast will now look to get the most out of Allen’s rehab period as he gets set to begin pre-season training. “By undergoing surgery as soon as possible it allows Oscar the maximum rehabilitation period to be ready for pre-season training,” the club emphasized.

As a restricted free agent, Allen’s future is up in the air. Both Brisbane and Hawthorn are hungry to land him. …of as much as $50 million more than West Coast offers, reports indicate. This development puts a further tinge of complication on Allen’s path back to health.
