AI Transforms Classic Film for Immersive Sphere Experience

Sphere Entertainment, led by CEOs James Dolan, now aims to change the way audiences are immersed in classic films. Meet the 2,000-person team developing what may be the most innovative city project ever. They’re employing the latest machine learning technologies to dramatically reimagine a favorite classic, “The Wizard of Oz.” As the filmmakers describe in the introductory short above, this ambitious undertaking is designed to immerse viewers in the epic cinematic realm of Oz like never before.

The project will use generative AI tools to reimagine scenes from the classic film. Dolan highlighted the project’s unique approach, stating, “Our standard on this was not to modify the film at all but to try and bring you into the film, as if you were in the studio when it was shot.” Their dedication to maintaining authenticity is sure to bring a unique take to everyone’s beloved, timeless classic.

As part of this project, AI will enhance visual elements of “The Wizard of Oz,” allowing for a more immersive experience. Ben Mankiewicz explained this process further, explaining how AI can enhance or add detail to particular scenes. He noted, “A grainy close-up of Dorothy becomes richly detailed, and then through a process called outpainting — though it seems like magic — we see the rest of the Scarecrow, the Yellow Brick Road, and the mountains of Oz.”

The Sphere’s cutting-edge technology aims to inspire and amaze audiences with an exciting, colorful and surreal audiovisual experience. The result is a film that combines the latest AI techniques with the authentic feel of the original project to maintain the film’s unique magic. Simultaneously, it introduces new layers of richness and intricacy. It’s this unique combination of nostalgia and modern technology that mesmerizes audiences. It’s representative of a larger trend in entertainment that’s using technology to bring people together in electrifying new ways.

Dolan’s second goal, though, is to elevate the art form visually with this project. He wants to change the way audiences engage with cinematic history. The 2,000-person team is dedicated to meticulously crafting an experience that honors the legacy of “The Wizard of Oz” while integrating cutting-edge technology.
