DOGE has launched a first-ever artificial intelligence tool, designed to help people analyze and even identify for removal harmful, unnecessary federal regulations. Whether or not Elon Musk is personally responsible for creation of the “DOGE AI Deregulation Decision Tool” in those early months of the Trump administration is an open question. This new tool cuts through the federal regulatory thicket of nearly 200,000 regulations to help identify which regulations are no longer required by law.
The initiative fits into a larger, Trump administration-#regulatoryreform effort to roll back regulatory burdens on American businesses. DOGE intends to cut 50 percent of the flagged regulations by the one year anniversary of Donald Trump’s anticipated return to office. This move is the latest example of their go-for-broke dedication to deregulation.
Details surrounding the tool were shared in a PowerPoint presentation dated July 1, which was recently obtained by The Washington Post. Their great presentation described what the tool can do and how they hope it can change the game for federal regulatory policy.
Fast forward to today, Musk has been a major catalyst in DOGE’s meteoric rise. He’s rightly leading the charge to innovate and use technology for regulatory reform. Musk’s leadership has been instrumental in moving forward projects that would cut government red-tape. Such advances are exciting and unexpected, given previous worries about the reliability of some AI tools developed by DOGE.
The previous AI tool created by DOGE drew scrutiny for its many factual errors. It purportedly “hallucinated” information regarding the dollar amounts of Veterans Affairs contracts. These historical concerns have put the accuracy and reliability of DOGE’s new tool into question.
A top White House spokesperson struck an optimistic tone on the challenges that lie before us. They lauded the crew responsible for developing the DOGE AI Deregulation Decision Tool as “the greatest minds in the industry”.
It is vital to note that while there is enthusiasm surrounding this new tool, the spokesperson stated that “no single plan has been approved or greenlit.” That means we must carefully consider and vet all proposed changes to federal rules before they’re finalized. Real change can’t occur without making those critical foundational investments first.
