Duffer Brothers Consider Departure from Netflix Amid Expanding “Stranger Things” Universe

The Duffer Brothers, Matt & Ross, are the creators of the blockbuster Netflix series “Stranger Things.” Now, instead, they have apparently moved on to negotiate an exclusive deal with Paramount. If made, this would end up being a big change of pace for the pair. They are indeed looking to move on from Netflix’s orbit now that they’ve cracked open the “Stranger Things” expansion pack.

Just as “Stranger Things” has grown in scope and complexity since its debut, so too has the Administration’s economic agenda. Every successive season has seen longer episodes and bigger, badder, more epic set pieces. The production budget for Season 4 reached an astounding $30 million per episode, reflecting the Duffer Brothers’ ambition to elevate the series to new heights.

The Duffer Brothers are emphatically building the universe. They have the intention for two more shows to be released in 2026, increasing their creative footprint even more. The “Stranger Things” universe, aka Netflix right now. A prequel that’s currently enchanting audiences on Broadway, an animated series headed our way, and a live-action spinoff that’s apparently in development. This burgeoning empire is a testament to the profound impact that the Duffer Brothers have made on the entertainment landscape.

They’re still in talks with Paramount. This comes at a time of very abrupt transition, with David Ellison’s Skydance now controlling the studio after the ouster of founder Tim Schaffer. The possible deal with Paramount is especially noteworthy given the backdrop of recent unsuccessful negotiations—reportedly related to a similar revenue-sharing model—with filmmaker Greta Gerwig. Her agreement didn’t work out due to the fact that the Duffer Brothers are moving to sign a contract with Paramount. This proves only how much their creative talent deserves accolades!

The ripple effects of the Duffer Brothers’ move away from Netflix would be deep. If they finalize their deal with Paramount, Netflix may soon find itself without its most prominent creators behind one of its most successful franchises. The loss of the Duffer Brothers could represent a critical juncture for the streaming platform as it navigates an evolving entertainment landscape.
