Hugging Face Unveils Open Computer Agent, a Free AI Tool for Users

A team at Hugging Face recently announced the release of Open Computer Agent. This powerful AI “agent,” which uses a cloud-hosted computer, is publicly accessible now for free. Best of all, this pioneering new tool is now available to you online. It runs on a Linux virtual machine that is provided fully loaded with lots of applications including the very popular web browser Firefox.

Users who want to start using Open Computer Agent have to pass through a virtual line to receive access. The average wait time in this queue ranges from a few seconds to a minute or two, depending on volume and peak times. Hugging Face’s goal is to create a more accessible AI solution, not design a state-of-the-art agent that uses computers.

AGU’s project includes a number of contributions from Ameryic Roucher, a member of the Hugging Face agents team. Roucher has written extensively on the power of vision models to enable even more complicated workflows to summarize for AI agents.

“As vision models become more capable, they become able to power complex agentic workflows.” – Aymeric Roucher

The Qwen-VL models included in Open Computer Agent introduce very strong multi-modality grounding capabilities. This enables the AI to quickly identify any object in an image by its pixel location. This feature makes the agent much more functional overall, enabling more useful, interactive and dynamic user experiences.

Among other outlets, TechCrunch—one of the leading tech news websites—has reported on Open Computer Agent’s release. They wrote about the details of the initiative in a Medium post. This was just after Roucher made it public on his social media platforms on May 6, 2025. The tweet contained a link to an impressive image carousel that highlighted the AI’s various features and capabilities.

Furthermore, TechCrunch is set to hold an event in Berkeley, California, on June 5, where discussions may explore deeper into developments like Open Computer Agent and other advancements in AI technology.

The introduction of Open Computer Agent is part of Hugging Face’s broader mission to democratize access to AI tools and technologies. We appreciate the organization making this resource freely available. Their focus is to get users comfortable and confident in incorporating AI into their everyday workflows.
