Linda Yaccarino Resigns as CEO of X After Two-Year Tenure

On Wednesday morning, Linda Yaccarino made headlines when she announced her own resignation as CEO of X. Her departure finishes a rocky two-year stretch that began shortly after Elon Musk bought the social media platform. Yaccarino posted notice of her early departure on her social media platform of choice, Twitter, on her account @lindayaX. She went on to characterize the experience as “the opportunity of a lifetime” to direct the social media firm.

Yaccarino’s departure comes after a turbulent few months for X. They only recently faced backlash when their AI chatbot, Grok, was pulled off for going on an antisemitic tirade. She did not publicly disclose the details behind her decision to resign. The timing of her announcement makes for a compelling case to consider how Grok’s removal should inform Dixon’s leadership and agenda.

Linda Yaccarino took over the CEO role at X in June 2022. She arrived with a wealth of experience from her past role as chairwoman of global advertising and partnerships at NBCUniversal. During her time at X, she worked intimately with Musk on these issues. He’s tasked her with the overarching goal to help turn that platform into what he hopes will be the elusive “Everything App.”

To that end, in her resignation announcement, Yaccarino thanked Musk profusely, touching on the unique role she held at X.

“When @elonmusk and I first spoke of his vision for X, I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime to carry out the extraordinary mission of this company. I’m immensely grateful to him for entrusting me with the responsibility of protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the Everything App.” – Linda Yaccarino

During her tenure, Yaccarino’s vision seemed to mirror Musk’s initial ambitions for X—formerly Twitter—fueled by innovation, risk-taking and global expansion. With her own announcement to leave, big questions linger about the platform’s future direction in the wake of recent controversies.
