Meta’s Instagram Threads Relocates to Threads.com with New Updates

Meta Platforms, Inc. is throwing some serious competition into the mix with Instagram Threads. Moving from @Threads.net to our final home here on @Threads.com my friends! This change represents a major advance for the relatively new competing platform, which hopes to challenge X, the social media giant formerly known as Twitter. Users will be more than ever greeted by a smooth and seamless experience. So when you enter Threads.net into your browser, you’ll be immediately sent to Threads.com.

Instagram Threads originally launched in early July 2023 at the URL Threads.net. In early March, the Threads.com domain was already taken — by a Sequoia-backed startup that had given us the Slack-killing alternative. This led to some confusion, but in September 2024, Meta purchased the Threads.com domain name, enabling the company to better establish its brand on the web. After the acquisition, Meta switched Threads.com over to point at Threads.net but has since switched it back.

Meta’s making it easier for users to access Threads.com by migrating them over. This decision seems like a part of Instagram Threads’ concerted efforts to improve the app’s brand image. Meta just revealed a huge game changer for users. The post Meta just dropped a major bombshell. You can now reach the Threads platform directly at its new domain, Threads.net, rather than being rerouted from Threads.com. This strategic shift is intended to bolster the platform’s use among youth as it faces increasing competition within the social media ecosystem.

Instagram’s head Adam Mosseri has teased a handful of other upcoming changes to the Threads web app. These improvements are aimed at creators who regularly post or livestream on the platform. They are often intended to maximize participation and engagement with their communities. The changes aim to make the portal more usable and functional for its primarily diverse user base.

Last year Shopify purchased the startup that previously owned Threads.com. Meta’s subsequent purchase of Domain Name was only made possible by this sale. The transition signifies a strategic move by Meta to consolidate its branding and enhance user experience across its various platforms.
