OpenAI Delays Release of Highly Anticipated Open Model

And who can blame OpenAI for announcing that it will further delay the open release of its open model. This ruling has raised many eyebrows throughout the artificial intelligence community. Originally slated for launch as early as next week, this model is by far the most hotly-anticipated AI development of the summer. OpenAI has promised an indefinite delay. For this to work, they should be given additional time to complete safety testing and address high-risk areas associated with the model.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, communicated this decision in a recent post on X, highlighting the unexpected achievements the team has made in their development process. Yet he underscored the important demonstration of safety first and a complete review. With its planned release of the developer’s model, UDOT has developers ready and chomping at the bit.

We need time to run additional safety tests and review high-risk areas. We are not yet sure how long it will take us,” Altman stated. Echoing these concerns, his remarks underscore OpenAI’s cautious approach with this roll out. It is the public interest organization’s first serious open model released in many years.

The delay places OpenAI in a competitive landscape where it must maintain its position as Silicon Valley’s leading AI lab. Competitors such as xAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic are pouring billions into their own generative AI-related technology and breakthroughs. Moonshot AI recently released Kimi K2, a pioneering open AI model with only a trillion parameters. On a number of agentic-coding benchmarks, it outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-4.1.

The delay will push back the date at which developers can start to play around with OpenAI’s open model. This monumental change occurs amidst a dynamic, fast-moving, and competitive AI industry.

Altman noted, “While we trust the community will build great things with this model, once weights are out, they can’t be pulled back. This is new for us and we want to get it right.” These comments show that he intends to make sure any new technology is safe and effective before it is deployed for public use.

OpenAI has been preparing for the eventual release of GPT-5. The tech community is abuzz with ever raising expectations as to what this new release will deliver. Now the organization is under the gun with little time to prepare. It seeks to use its development of new products to cement its leadership in artificial intelligence development.
