Reddit Faces Worldwide Outage as Users Report Connection Errors

Reddit was down for almost 30 minutes on Monday, with the site down for users all around the world. The issue began around 11:20 a.m. ET and prompted the platform to investigate “elevated errors” across both its website and application. By 11:52 a.m. ET, Reddit Status confirmed that they were actively looking into the situation, as more than 90,000 users reported connection problems to the downtime tracking site Downdetector.

Downdetector, best known for aggregating anecdotal reports from users it is currently out affected, captured the spike in reports of outages this morning. The spike in fix-it issues suggested a major, system-wide collapse in connectivity across rural, suburban, and even urban areas. Social media posts including screenshots from Reddit’s status page illustrated the severity of the situation and provided enough incentive for Reddit to immediately work on a fix.

The team at Reddit identified the underlying issue and worked diligently to implement a fix by 12:10 p.m. ET. After taking this action, they kept a close eye on the results to make sure that the solution was truly fixing the problem. By 12:21 p.m. ET, Reddit Status updated its page to confirm that all systems were operational once again.

This latest outage is the fourth time Reddit has been under reporting elevated errors in February alone. Given the repeat of these known issues, all of which affect the platform’s overall stability and reliability, the platform’s future doesn’t look optimistic. Users took to Twitter to express their exasperation at the constant changes. Thousands more use the platform to share real-time discussions and information.
