Sora Faces Legal Challenge Over Feature Name Amid Rapid Growth

Sora, the pioneering app that’s become a national phenomenon since its launch last fall, is rocking the tech world. Now, it must contend with a legal showdown with Cameo over its flagship feature, appropriately named “Cameo.” The struggle flares over again as Sora makes its first appearance on iOS this September. From there, it stayed up high in the App Store charts, accumulating more than 1 million downloads in just the first week.

The app’s meteoric ascent to stardom hasn’t been free of controversy. Sora, a full-fledged vendor of deepfake technology, has come under scrutiny for their own management of said technology. After its first launch, people started sharing embarrassing videos of prominent historical figures including Martin Luther King Jr. As a result of the backlash, Sora halted the creation of content featuring Dr. King’s likeness last month. In response to these issues, the company has now developed more robust guardrails to reduce the likelihood of such occurrences going forward.

On November 4th, 2025, Sora posted from their Twitter, @soraofficialapp. They responded to Lauren Forris’ outreach, a journalist focused on media and technology at TechCrunch. Forris has been keen to follow the current events as they’ve unfolded with Sora and their legal troubles. She can be emailed at laurenf.techcrunch@gmail.com and messaged encrypted at laurenforris22.25 in Signal.

The legal dispute with Cameo raises questions about trademark rights and the implications of using similar names in the tech industry. Sora, who is deeply passionate about this, is in the thick of it. It is dedicated to maximizing user experience and is committed to responsible use of all its functionalities. OpenAI’s partnership with Sora represents the tremendous connection between AI and creative content. With this collaboration, Sora is set on the leading edge of the development of these new technologies.
