In a bid to revitalize its struggling Android app, X has appointed Nikita Bier as its new head of product. Bier is infamous for his mastery of growth hacking for teen-oriented social apps such as Gas and TBH. He has broken the highest of ceilings in this unique field. Gas was acquired by Discord, and TBH was acquired by Facebook. This proves his skill to increase user engagement and enhance application performance.
Since the launch of X’s Android app, there have been a host of issues, most notably when it comes to stability. Users have complained of a buggy experience overall—with crashes often preventing the app from being usable. All of this poor performance has led to a very public and painful drop in downloads. As of July 2023, X is down a stunning 44% Android downloads year over year. This drop underscores the app’s continued struggles on this platform. Even before this recent slide, X had already seen a 49% decrease in Android downloads.
X’s iOS version has shown itself to be quite slippery. It saw just a 15% increase in downloads for the same month. Even with these brighter numbers on iOS, the overall picture is still extremely bleak for X. It’s no surprise, then, that the company’s overall downloads cratered by 35% as July 2025 loomed. Moreover, its average mobile downloads fell 26% year-over-year.
In July 2025, X announced that it had reached a net revenue of $16.9 million. That’s a drop from the $18.8 million grossed in March of 2025. This revenue estimate represents a modest growth from $16.8 million in June 2025. It is encouraging to see that even amid continued overall worsening, some real stabilization is beginning to take place. It’s clear that the firm is still in a tough place when it comes to the growth of its subscription revenues, which are key to long-term sustainability.
To meet these challenges, X is on an unprecedented hiring spree. In fact, they’re currently hiring for what they refer to as the “Android Dream Team.” To achieve this, this initiative will completely rebuild the buggy Android app from the ground up and provide users with a much smoother experience. Elon Musk personally runs X with a heavy eye toward making Android phones better. That kind of improvement is foundational for bringing in new users and ultimately increasing subscription revenue.
