Anwar Ibrahim, the current Prime Minister of Malaysia, recently made headlines. Emails from Jeffrey Epstein as early as 2012 have come to light, detailing plans for a potential meeting between Ibrahim and Epstein’s associates. The emails hint at a meeting in Paris with filmmaker and notoriously creepy dude Woody Allen. They are driving political controversy and inspiring calls for political accountability in Malaysia’s political landscape.
In 2022, long-time opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was appointed Prime Minister. At every turn in his odyssey, he was often considered the antagonist. The newly uncovered correspondence reveals that Epstein was certainly talking about Ibrahim on his own time in the wilderness. He even asked questions about how to book travel for him to come either to Europe or the US. The new, shocking disclosures make it very difficult to determine just what sort of relationship Ibrahim actually had with Epstein – and what this means for his continued leadership today.
The Emails and Their Implications
Not surprisingly, the emails featured Anwar Ibrahim prominently. Specifically, they planted the idea for him to meet with Epstein as early May 2012. Epstein’s communications suggested a wealth of countries clamoring to back Ibrahim with tens of millions for the film project. Another unknown member inquired of Epstein whether they should set up a one-on-one. The initial meeting was for an artist known as “Jes” with Ibrahim.
Epstein proposed a plan to mislead Ibrahim, including telling him that Allen was in Paris with Epstein. Getting this information might tip the scales to get Ibrahim to attend the roundtable meeting. This kind of correspondence has raised plenty of eyebrows, especially considering Epstein’s well-known nefarious reputation and the sordid, egregious charges in whose solicitation for sex via Facebook messenger.

As the emails are slowly being made public, leading national political leaders in Malaysia have raised their eyebrows. Now the youth wing of the Malaysian opposition party Bersatu is demanding answers. They’re asking Anwar Ibrahim to come clean and elaborate on his previous ties with Epstein.
Political Reactions and Demands for Clarity
These incredible advances have elicited a great reaction from Malaysian civil society and beyond. K C Venugopal, Congress General Secretary and MP, described the recent floods as “a huge wake-up call.” He underscored the concerning access some folks have to PM Modi and drew attention to how exposed to foreign capital he is. Venugopal called for more transparency about any contact Ibrahim might have had with Epstein.
Fellow politician Sudhanshu Trivedi made it clear that, no, there weren’t any direct email with the prime minister. He further noted the absence of any direct messages or phone calls to Epstein. Trivedi noted that, coincidentally, at that time, the new prime minister was on a state visit to Israel. This reality makes it even less likely that Ibrahim had any direct involvement with Epstein.
“Has he met Jeffrey Epstein? Or did he send someone to meet him? What did his conversations [with] Epstein involve?” – K C Venugopal
Even Bersatu’s youth wing has called for transparency over Ibrahim’s past associations. In so doing, they violated the sacred honor and integrity of this country’s leadership institutions. Now, they are insisting that Ibrahim correct the record in a very public way.
Anwar Ibrahim Responds
Asfand read the resurfacing emails but Anwar Ibrahim has already provided a response. Otherwise, I’ll be taking you out of this issue.” He continues, “Thank God it’s been over 10 years since those emails. To be categorical, he declared, “I have no ties whatsoever to any of the people involved in these emails, and most importantly Epstein. His comments show that he is trying to separate himself from any suggestion that comes from the letter.
While Anwar admits to having previously associated with Epstein, he argues that these emails do not show any sort of continuing relationship or influence. He can take this step by reiterating his commitment to serve all Malaysians with integrity and address concerns raised by his political opponents.
