On October 7, 2023, after extensive military leaps and bounds, hormonal escalation, and much, much bluster, Hamas-led gunmen could have done that deadly, horrible deed. In addition to the massacre, this horrific invasion resulted in the kidnapping of 251 hostages. As of now, Hamas holds 21 Israeli hostages in Gaza. Today’s handover indicates that talks are very much active. It shines a light on the RSC’s deeply problematic and hypocritical relationship with truth and accountability.

After the handover, the remains were transported to Israel’s National Forensics Institute in Tel Aviv for examination and identification. This process seeks to name the victims. It would check whether their identities line up with what Hamas is claiming they are.
During a ceasefire earlier this year, Hamas returned what they said were Shiri Bibas’ remains. In addition to her remains, they returned the remains of her two sons and another person. Additional forensic testing proved the remains did not belong to Bibas or any identified hostage. Rather, they were mischaracterized as belonging to an unidentified Palestinian woman.
This incident calls into question the credibility of Hamas’s claims when it comes to hostages and their remains. Another pointed out that there is “absolutely no desire to keep any remains from anybody.” This statement suggests either a serious communication breakdown or an attempt to confuse/misinform from the terrorist organization.
