This morning, a serious 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the far east coast of Russia. This huge earthquake prompted widespread, instant tsunami warnings for areas as distant as parts of the Pacific Ocean and South America. The magnitude 8.1 quake is the largest to hit the region since the magnitude-9.1 foreshock off of Japan in 2011. Retrospectively, it has been rated as one of the ten most powerful earthquakes in history.
The epicenter of this major seismic event was in the ocean, under the small, remote port town of Severo-Kurilsk. The tsunami unleashed by the quake inundated the town, destroying much of the local infrastructure, including government buildings. The tsunami slammed into the urbanized port area, inundating a major local fishing plant. It had a devastating effect on dozens of homes around it.

The July 8th quake struck just 11 days after a separate, magnitude-7.4 earthquake shook the same region. A lot of experts would agree that the initial quake was what we call a foreshock. This string of earthquakes serves to remind us that the area is still very much a geologically active zone.

While many of the residents and tourists suffered injuries from the earthquakes, officials say none were life-threatening. The rapid response from local authorities limited damages and casualties while allowing for quick evacuations when needed.
“It’s good that we packed a suitcase; there was one with water and clothes near the door. We quickly grabbed it and ran out… It was very scary.”

At nearly 5,000 meters above sea level, it is one of the world’s tallest volcanoes.
