U.S. Vice President JD Vance meets with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Rome. This was their first meeting since an angry, throw down, knock down, Oval Office confrontation. The discussions took place at the Villa Taverna, the U.S. ambassador’s residence, amidst escalating tensions stemming from Russia’s ongoing military campaign in Ukraine. In a poignant press conference immediately after the meeting, Zelenskyy expressed his grave fears over the humanitarian consequences of the war. He pointed to Russia’s obvious purpose of attacking civilians.
While in the Vatican, Zelenskyy attended the inaugural mass of Pope Leo. Having him personally present there made him a much more appealing target for international support. The dramatic setting for his meetings was further highlighted by the recent surge of violent escalations, including the largest drone attack on Ukraine to date. Reports have emerged that Russia has doubled down with its drone strikes, targeting residential areas on the outskirts of Kyiv. Tens of thousands more have tragically lost their lives since the conflict started. In the background, tens of millions of people have been displaced.
Key Discussions in Rome
Watch our conversation, a discussion about some of the most important challenges facing Ukraine right now. Zelenskyy even alluded to their recent formal conversations about the Istanbul talks. He added that Russian representatives sent, in essence, a low-level delegation with no real authority to make such critical decisions.
“We discussed the talks in Istanbul, where the Russians sent a low-level delegation with no decision-making powers,” – Mr. Zelenskyy
The two leaders covered various aspects such as sanctions against Russia, bilateral trade, defense cooperation, and future prisoner exchanges. Zelenskyy emphasized the need for these talks to be key, foundational, and necessary steps toward achieving a permanent resolution to the war.
“We also touched on the need for sanctions against Russia, bilateral trade, defence cooperation, the situation on the battlefield and the future exchange of prisoners,” – Mr. Zelenskyy
This dialogue comes after a recent agreement to exchange 1,000 prisoners each between Russia and Ukraine, reflecting ongoing efforts to find a resolution amid hostility.
Humanitarian Concerns and Ongoing Attacks
Zelenskyy’s remarks following his meeting with Vance highlighted the humanitarian crisis resulting from Russia’s military actions. He stated that Russia has a clear goal: to continue killing civilians.

As yet another example of this escalated aggression, Russian forces have made near-daily attacks with drones all over Ukraine in recent months. The recent drone attack has escalated to become the deadliest of the war thus far. This needless escalation threatens the safety of civilians and their security.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has been offering clues as to how he would like the war to end in recent days. He stressed the importance of investigating the “underlying factors” that set the conflict ablaze. He had said that he aimed to produce the circumstances for a permanent peace and ensure the security of Russia.

Looking Ahead
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy and Putin are preparing for their first calls with the new U.S. President Donald Trump. The international community is watching closely and with hope for signs of any meaningful movement towards peace. Debates in Rome and the latest news out of Türkiye suggest that diplomatic efforts are ongoing. This stubbornness happens despite the realities of the incomprehensible situation on the ground.
