About Australian Herald

The Australian Herald reports the news from across Australia every day: politics and government, business and markets, technology, sport and lifestyle.

It is written for readers who want the facts of a story quickly and in plain words. Each story is short, says what happened and what it means, and is checked before it goes on the site.

What we cover

The Herald has six sections:

• Australia: Government and politics, courts, health, education, the regions and the stories that shape the country.
• Business: Companies, jobs, banks, deals, regulators and the cost of living.
• Markets: The ASX, the Australian dollar, commodities, bonds and the Reserve Bank.
• Tech: Technology companies, cyber security, telecoms, AI and start-ups.
• Sport: AFL, NRL, cricket, rugby, football, tennis, the Olympics and Australians abroad.
• Lifestyle: Food, travel, wellbeing, home and design, fashion and culture.

How the stories are made

Each story starts from a report, an announcement or a press release that someone else has already published. We write our own short account of its facts, in our own words, and check the names, numbers and quotes against that report before the story is published. The editorial policy explains the checks.

Who answers for the stories

Every story carries the name of a member of the Australian Herald editorial team. Meet them on the team page.

A story is about Australia: its governments, courts, companies, people, teams and places, or a development elsewhere that directly affects Australians.

What Australian Herald is not

• It is not investment, legal or medical advice. Stories report what others have said and done; they do not tell you what to buy, sell or do.
• It does not publish opinion or commentary.
