Carlton, Melbourne and Tasmania have approached departing Brisbane coach Chris Fagan about football roles, while the Lions are preparing discussions with possible replacements, including former West Coast premiership coach Adam Simpson.

Fagan plans to move to Melbourne in January and continue working in football despite saying he felt worn out after leading Brisbane for 10 years. His time with the Lions does not formally end until mid-to-late October.

Reporter Tom Morris said Fagan wanted full-time work, preferably with a Victorian club, in a position similar to his coaching and development role under Alastair Clarkson from 2008 to 2013. Fagan previously served as Neale Daniher’s assistant at Melbourne in the early 2000s.

AFL reporter Mitch Cleary said Danny Daly was leading Brisbane’s preliminary meetings with coaching candidates. Simpson was interested in the vacancy after speaking with North Melbourne but choosing not to pursue that opportunity.

Cleary said Lions assistant Cam Bruce was expected to advance directly to a formal interview because the club already knew him well.
