Geelong has acquired Rowan Marshall from St Kilda in a trade that gives the Saints pick No.14. The Cats also receive a future third-round selection as part of the deal for the 30-year-old ruckman.

St Kilda co-captain Callum Wilkie was speaking to reporters when he learnt negotiations had ended in an agreement. He had just answered a question about Marshall and initially laughed, believing the reporter who broke the news was joking.

After the deal was confirmed to him, Wilkie congratulated his departing teammate and said he was happy with the outcome for both sides. He said Marshall had served St Kilda for 10 years and he wanted to thank him in person.

Marshall had sought a move to Geelong for a second consecutive year and stayed away from St Kilda’s best and fairest event.

Saints general manager Lenny Hayes said the club respected Marshall’s wish to move but needed adequate compensation. He said the additional first-round selection, alongside pick No.8, met that requirement, although St Kilda had wanted Marshall to finish his career there.

In a statement, Marshall thanked supporters, coaches, teammates and staff for their support during his time at St Kilda. He said he was leaving with positive memories and wished the Saints well.
