Chris Waller’s four runners have received contrasting barrier draws for the 1600-metre Caulfield Guineas, with Tron Bolt assigned the outside gate in the 11-horse field. Diameter drew barrier nine and Central Europe seven, while Somethings Burnin’ will start from three.

Waller said barriers mattered in the Guineas and his runners generally settled further back when drawn wide. He said that approach left them dependent on luck and the pace of the race.

The trainer identified the Guineas as Tron Bolt’s target after the colt won the 1600-metre J J Atkins at Brisbane’s Queensland Winter Carnival. Central Europe, a son of Frankel, is still seeking his first win after recording placings in three of five starts.

Diameter beat Somethings Burnin’ when the pair filled the first two places in the 1600-metre Stutt Stakes at Caulfield on 27 September. Waller said Somethings Burnin’ would wear a lugging bit to give his rider greater control.

Before the draw, all four horses galloped at Caulfield and were introduced to the tie-up stalls and mounting yard. Waller said familiarity with the surroundings helped horses stay relaxed and concentrate on racing. Central Europe had a more demanding workout than his stablemates, with Waller saying he needed to avoid becoming too fresh.
