Best retains Kangaroos centre spot as World Cup selection contest builds
Latrell Mitchell has again missed out at left centre, with coach Kevin Walters facing a selection decision before the 8 November semi-final.

Bradman Best will get another chance to press for a World Cup knockout berth after retaining his place at left centre for the Kangaroos against Cook Islands, again ahead of Latrell Mitchell.
The Newcastle centre made his Test debut as Australia beat Fiji 36-22. Speaking after training in Townsville, Best acknowledged that he was auditioning for a position in the knockout side, but said the competition was healthy and the players were supporting each other.
Kotoni Staggs has occupied right centre throughout the tournament, while Mitchell and Best play on the left for their clubs. Best said he would be willing to switch sides if coach Kevin Walters wanted him there. The semi-final is at Allianz Stadium on 8 November.
Despite his debut victory, Best said he wanted greater involvement and felt Australia’s performance against Fiji had been sloppy.
His club future is also approaching a decision point. Best becomes a free agent on 1 November and knows Parramatta is preparing a substantial offer, although he has expressed a desire to reach an agreement with the Knights.
Best said his immediate focus remained on the World Cup. He intends to consider his future after his representative commitments end and said he was not rushing a decision.
