Cooper Bai tours PNG Chiefs base as Titans departure timing remains unclear
Melbourne could consider an early deal for the 19-year-old forward, Dave Riccio said, after Bai confirmed he would not re-sign with Gold Coast for 2028.

Cooper Bai has visited the PNG Chiefs’ base in Port Moresby after confirming he would not sign another Gold Coast contract for 2028. The 19-year-old forward’s future beyond the Titans remains undecided, including whether he will leave before his current deal expires.
Dave Riccio said Melbourne might be interested in arranging an early arrival for Bai, having narrowly missed out on signing him previously. Bai had instead renewed his deal with Gold Coast. Riccio said Stefano Utoikamanu’s future could be a factor in any Storm approach.
Utoikamanu’s contract runs until the end of 2027. Melbourne have offered him an extension, but he appears ready to explore his options. Gold Coast have also been linked with possible swaps involving Roosters players Lindsay Collins and Nat Butcher, although Riccio said a Collins move was not happening.
Bai made 23 appearances this year after making his Titans debut last year. His father, former PNG and Melbourne player Marcus Bai, has urged him to consider the decision carefully, warning of the pressure he could face playing in PNG. Marcus is willing to leave the Chiefs board if that is required for the club to recruit his son.
