Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from Australian and Victorian cricket, ending his international career at 38 after missing selection for a hoped-for farewell against England. His playing career will continue through the Big Bash and other T20 competitions.

On the Final Word podcast, Maxwell said he had wanted one last Australian appearance at the MCG in the opening T20 on 21 November. However, he understood the selectors’ desire to expose younger players to international competition before the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

A farewell would also have meant postponing an injection for his knee, Maxwell said. With selection ruled out, he could instead undertake eight weeks of rehabilitation aimed at preparing him for the Big Bash.

Maxwell’s T20 international record comprises 2,897 runs from 130 matches, with an average of 28.97 and strike rate of 154.42. He registered five centuries and 12 fifties, and struck the winning runs when Australia claimed the 2021 T20 World Cup.

His last Australian outing was during the unsuccessful T20 World Cup campaign. Already retired from ODI cricket, he was omitted from the June T20 tour of Bangladesh. He also represented Australia in seven Tests, none played at home.

Maxwell informed his Victoria teammates after scoring seven in a one-day match. He said addressing the group was more emotional than he had anticipated, acknowledging the state’s support and its role in his career.
