Cameron Green will miss Australia’s opening Test against South Africa in Durban after an abdominal strain sustained during the final ODI failed to heal in time. Nic Maddinson and Cooper Connolly are the contenders to take his place.

Australia expect Green to recover during the three-Test series, but do not anticipate using him as a bowler because he has also been managing a shoulder problem.

Andrew McDonald defended the selection of Maddinson, citing his Sheffield Shield record and ability to bat in different positions. The 35-year-old averaged 52.37 in the competition between December 2018 and March 2024, although his latest first-class match was 18 months ago.

Maddinson, whose previous Test appearance was in December 2016, joined the squad after scoring a one-day cup century and following Josh Inglis’s finger fracture. McDonald said Maddinson offered flexibility and the skills to handle both pace and spin.

McDonald indicated Travis Head would retain his opening role and Alex Carey would stay at No.6. He said batting output would carry more weight than Connolly’s spin bowling when selectors choose Green’s replacement.

Conditions at Kingsmead could also influence the team’s balance. With a dry pitch expected, McDonald said Australia would consider all options, but would need a compelling reason to select two spinners. Matt Kuhnemann is available in the squad.
